The worst has already happened

Flinching before an imagined, anticipated blow
expecting catastrophe,
fantasising over the awful possibility,
the potential reality and appalling repercussions.

Retreating, evading, wincing
quailing in the grip of an old, old paradigm…

but

the worst has already happened.

The worst has already happened.

The worst has already happened
  I survived
and all after is an echo

  only an echo.
